This is a selection of 10 paintings from a series I did called "The Writing of Light". They started off simply as a process of endless writing to deal with a period of depression. However, they soon became an investigation of the visual relationship between the canvas marks, the canvas plane, and the canvas edge. This becomes evident in the second painting shown in this series. My concern was to develop a set of techniques by which the fundamental trio - the marks, the plane, and the edge - could be integrated to an extreme level that had not previously been achieved in abstract expressionism. This integration was finally achieved starting with the fifth painting shown in this series. I will discuss, with each painting, how the issue of integration develops. The series was done in the years 1995-8. All the paintings are 5 feet by 4 feet.
