3--Planes
(1) Filled plane shapes and volume The shape of a plane filled inside the outline has an attraction of full mass. Fill a square or a circle in black. They give the impression of a firm, wonderful, stable, and full shape. It is true, the frosted color of poster colors is good, but when we look at a bigger square or a circle printed with printing ink, we gaze and wonder where this attractive impression comes from. It is not only because of its good shape that it has adjacent and complete shape made by geometrical form, but also because of the sense of fullness in the shape of the plane. We can understand this feeling in the work of Malevich, the Russian who once painted a big square filled with one color and called it art. Yet, there are many shapes. Simple organic forms are still good.
Generally, compared with complicated shapes, simple hollow shapes give
a stronger impression of the strength of mass and fullness of volume.
