3 -- Metamorphosis

- Deformation by lenses -

We can also get distorted figures even if a lens or another thing which has the function of a lens is used. For example, when a shape is looked at through a plate of glass which has a wavy, uneven surface, the shape looks deformed. Let's examine some metamorphosis in these deformations.

When we look up the meaning of "metamorphosis" in a dictionary, we find "deformation (by magical power)", "change in quality", "transfiguration", "drastic change of shape (appearance, character, etc.)", the "metamorphosis (of insects)", and so on. In a word, it means that an appearance of a shape is significantly "deformed", or that the shape changes itself with a change in quality. Then, a mind of the "unexpectedness" is hidden in back.

· All four figures shown below represent "deformation" which contains unexpectedness. An experimental example of deformation using a big column of glass is shown in Figure 546.

We are momentarily surprised because those figures move in the reverse direction when the hand is held out and the head is moved up.

Figure 548 is a view of many marbles placed on the pattern of Figure 547. A marble reflects all the pattern areas of 23cm × 23cm, though its diameter of 1.2cm is much smaller. We are surprised at the fact that from the many marbles with the function of super fish eyes, the patterns extend into a wide area in addition to the deformation of the patterns.

The pattern of easy geometrical configurations become complicated shapes by using the deformation of the special lens (Fig. 549).
