This painting is the last one of the first series. It was a turning point for important reasons. Observe that the surface of the canvas sits like a stone slab beneath lines. In this painting I had started to investigate the relation of lines to what I call the compacted surface. Such a surface is more than a drumskin. It is like a hard rock. As such it became an expression of the intense religious experiences that I was having at the time - i.e., conveying the very stone massiveness of the religious experience. It is related to the way in which the great mystic Meister Eckhardt described the soul: as like an immovable mountain of lead. However, I develop it considerably further. The next two series of paintings invent and elaborate a set of techniques for creating the compacted surface, and discuss its meaning more deeply.
