The Mathematical Theory
of Sculpture by Michael Leyton
The sculptures shown on this page were created in association with my
forthcoming book. In this book, I develop a mathematical theory of design,
in which the designprocess is formalized in terms of hierarchies of groups.
A central aspect of the theory is a grouptheoretic formalization of
aesthetic content and its relation to the successive decisions of the
artist. In order to develop this theory, I had to carefully observe my own
design decisions, for example, when creating these sculptures. I soon
realized that one had to invent a new class of mathematical groups in order
to describe the layering of decisions in the designobject. This class of
groups is described in detail the book. You can see enlarged views of my
sculptures by clicking on them.
