ALPHABET OF THE SPIRIT

by Daniel Fleckles

About the Work

The digital world enables me to bring to life images that might otherwise have remained inaccessible for being far too complex to paint or draw. What may at first appear to be a photographic artifact is actually a fictional object, an image constructed from multiple layers. Each layer is a "slice" of collected materials that produce the illusion of a single object. Work of this kind often has content that is not obvious and is, in fact, sometimes intentionally hidden. The five images from Alphabet of the Spirit possess eccentric features in terms of time and space. Yet their polymorphous aspects result in seamless, fully realized compositions. I work in the tradition of illuminated manuscripts––with images designed to be seen alongside blocks of text as well as to be viewed independently.

Alphabet of the Spirit appears for the first time on this website. Digital prints can be ordered by contacting me at: sharonherson@comcast.net.
