(1) Selection of a unit
To make wide variations in a multiplex KOHSEI (Basic Art & Design), it is desirable that a unit
have a simple geometrical shape. Besides, there is a need to choose the shape which has limitless
possibilities, since problems surely occur in the process of grouping units, as a result of employing
theories of the preceding section. Such problems include "the fusion of shapes", in which case shapes
are fused into one, and "the shape of interspace" which is determined by the use of the surrounding
units.
After due consideration for these things, I conceived one arrow shape. It is made when squares
are cut obliquely and vertical (Fig. 148). This is a simple shape with its sides determined as
1:2:4:2Ö2, and its angles 45o and 90o only.
