(iii) Striking A percussion instrument is a striking tool used to generate a sound (musical instrument). In the field of modeling, shapes and colors are made by striking goods (tools and materials). Lines can be drawn by "pulling" writing implements such as a writing brush and a pen in parallel to the paper surface. In other words, the percussion instrumental method is used to throw these goods towards the surface of the paper. On the previous page, the method of picking and flipping the thread with India ink vertically on the surface of the paper was discussed. Let's try to examine "striking" things as a method to throw things more violently. If a hard cylinder with a circular edge is hit by a hammer, a dimple is make in the shape of a circle on the paper. Although this is one of the drawing techniques using striking goods, let's strike something with paints based on the view point of creating a pattern. The diagram below was drawn by beating a Kent paper
many times by using extremely thin bamboo sticks with black poster color.
The bamboo sticks happened to be in my hands. Paints were pressed on the
hard surface of the paper by a strong force and at a great speed, which
generated scattering splashes by repulsion. Then, a violent feeling is
expressed here. The details can not be seen clearly here since the figure
has been reduced from a larger screen. But, if it is seen through a loupe,
the lines are close to the shapes drawn by the thread of the India ink
marker.
