(vii) Faint patterns

It is one of the important skills in calligraphy to utilize faintness using a writing brush. We feel force and speed of drawings when we see a trace of writings with a faintness by fast moving thick writing brushes or painting brushes. This makes us feel life in the paintings. Solid hairs are better than soft hairs for a writing brush to create faintness. Paints with less water should be used, and the movement of the brush should be quick.

· Paints with less water were rubbed on a sheet of charcoal paper which has a faint unevenness and friction on its surface as shown in Figure 607. From the right, shapes were drawn by rubbing India ink with a finger, India ink with the shaft of a bamboo pen, and poster color with a brush for oil paintings.
